How do music videos interpret sex and gender?
This group of students researched the representation of concepts such as sex, gender, relationships and emotional health in music videos. The group analyzed songs in the country, pop and R&B genres and compared their portrayals of these topics.
The students found that country music videos were typically the least objectifying and portrayed the most positive views about sex and relationships. Pop and R&B were found to be similar in their depictions, with both positive and negative examples shown from the two genres.
One other key question the project addressed was whether there is a difference between self-objectification and being objectified by others.
